Quality ChildcareChildcare campaigners have welcomed comments by the head of the Metropolitan Police in support of Sure Start children’s centres.

In an interview with ITV London, Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson said that high-quality childcare, such as schemes offered through Sure Start, were “equally important” in the fight against crime as police work.

While police work can suppress crime, he said, long-term support through initiatives like Sure Start is needed to tackle the root cause.

Nurseries charge for free childcare

Nurseries charging for free childcareNurseries are charging parents for government-funded childcare and reimbursing them at a later date, despite a legal duty to provide care free at the point of delivery, CYP Now has learned.

Currently, all three- and four-year-olds are entitled to 12.5 hours of free childcare every week, but this is set to increase to 15 hours from September.

Parents have begun to complain that they are being charged for free childcare, and refunded only at the end of the month or term.

Review highlights gaps in childcare in Wales

Providing childcareSignificant gaps in the provision of emergency, out-of-school, and holiday childcare provision across Wales have been highlighted in a review.

The Welsh Assembly Government looked at data collected in 22 council areas.

There are also fears that the situation could get worse because budget cuts and changes to the benefits system mean more parents are looking for provision.

The assembly government said: “The needs of children and families are extremely important”.

Obesity warning as playgrounds are mothballed

Child obesityPlans to build up to 1,300 playgrounds have been axed as part of the Government’s public spending cuts.

The Department for Education has frozen grants to 132 local authorities in England to construct a generation of new play areas, many of which were originally designed by children.

Officials insisted the building programme – launched under Labour – was “unrealistic” and funding would be cut to protect frontline services.

Consultation launched to inform EYFS review

EYFS ReviewDame Clare Tickell has launched a consultation on her independent review of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Early years professionals and parents are being urged to respond to the review, which covers issues of regulation, curriculum, children’s welfare and whether early-years-age children should be formally assessed.

Tickell said: “I particularly want to hear from those who are delivering the EYFS on a regular basis and can advise on where we could make improvements. These views will help shape the future of the EYFS and will be invaluable in helping me to identify the best parts as well as the parts that may have to change.”

Government targets child poverty with reform of the benefits system

Child benefits systemWork and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has denounced families’ dependence on welfare for allowing children to remain trapped in poverty, as the government set out its proposals for reforming the benefits system.

Speaking in east London, Duncan Smith established his plans for welfare reform in the 21st Century Welfare white paper, published today. Options in the paper include combining elements of the current income-related benefits and tax credit systems, bringing out-of-work and in-work support together in a single system, and supplementing monthly household earnings through credit payments reflecting circumstances such as children, housing and disability.
