NDNA Welcomes ‘Fairness Fund’ but Stresses Free Session Funding Issues Must be Resolved

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Purnima Tanuku - NDNA Free Childcare campaignNational Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) today welcomed how the Government is looking to extend free nursery places for two year olds as part of a £7bn ‘fairness fund’ for disadvantaged children. However, NDNA highlighted it was crucial to resolve issues with funding for existing free sessions to ensure the sector could provide a high-quality entitlement for two year olds.

Purnima Tanuku, Chief Executive of National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) comments: “NDNA welcomes how government is recognising the value of early years, and seeing how high-quality provision can support children from less advantaged backgrounds. Evidence demonstrates that working with families in their child’s earliest years delivers long-term outcomes that continue throughout a child’s schooling and into adulthood. We are keen to know more about what proportion of this money will be available for free places for two year olds, and how many children may benefit. More widely, NDNA is also urging government to recognise how it is vital to continue to provide investment in early years, including in the workforce, to support these children in receiving a continuously improving service.”

Opening a nursery. Would you do it again?

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Opening a nurseryCompetition for places, condemnation of the Government’s Code of Practice and restricted cash flows. Can the love of providing quality childcare really be enough for someone to start-up their own nursery today?

We are often asked for advice by those considering starting a nursery, on where to start, best practice or simply if the idea is right for them.

The shape of the industry today, suggests that nursery owners have never had it so tough, so  would new, and inexperienced owners be able to cope?

We thought who better to ask than our readers, experienced and professional childcare providers? We want to hear about your experiences and advice on running a nursery, so that we can provide the next generation of providers with a future reference point to help them make their  decision.

Are there any common mistakes that you’ve learnt from over the years, or is there a secret to maintaining a healthy relationship with parents?

“Share my World / It’s not just child’s play”

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Spend time engaging with childrenDeslynne Roberts, Managing Director of Areté Consultancy, enlightened childcare professionals with her seminar ‘Share my World/ It’s not just child’s play’ last week at the Childcare Expo.

Following on from her success, she has kindly decided to provide Parenta readers with an insight into the seminar topics for this week.

Exploring the complexity of learning through play in everyday practice, there is a clear emphasis on the importance of purposeful engagement with children. This needs to be implemented by Early Years practitioners to reinforce the benefits for children’s learning and development. I’m sure you’re aware that children love to learn, but they can only do so when practitioners spare the time to engage with children, share their world and support play-based learning.

Parenta Bosses make it to the summit of Kilimanjaro

After 4 days and one night of trekking, Parenta founders Allan Presland and Nick Williams successfully reached the top of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania last week! It was a gruelling challenge, that had taken 6 months to prepare for and a huge amount of effort to acheive.

They are raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, and the group has raised over £125,000 for the charity which will make a huge difference to so many people’s lives.
Allan referred to the climb as “The most physically demanding I have ever done” and Nick called the experience “Amazing”, but they are both pleased to have achieved the summit and raised so much money for such a great cause.
If you would like to help raise money for Marie Curie, simply head over to the donations page to leave a small contribution.

Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing, totally free, to give people with terminal cancer and other illnesses the choice of dying at home, supported by their families.

Well done guys – everyone at Parenta is really proud!
