My name is Amber Wightman. I am 17 years old, I go to college and I am currently doing a week’s worth of work experience at Parenta. The work experience I am doing involves the marketing team and it means I get to do fun stuff like creating a poster, writing this article and a few other things like making a craft video. Today, I am going to talk about why work experience is important for young people like me aged 16-18. I will talk about the benefits of work experience and hopefully by the end of it you will be considering doing work experience, too!

The benefits it has for your CV

I would like to start off with the fact that doing work experience looks very professional on your CV, it impresses future employers and it shows that you are a hard worker and independent. Also, if you have a dream job and you would like to make it a reality then gain some experience of the role you are fascinated by and do a week or two of work experience in that industry. That way, you can decide if the job is suited for you.

Learning new skills

Work experience is a great way to gain new skills, as it shows you can adapt to any work that you choose to do and you can, of course, do more than one work experience. This means you have a variety of careers to pick from. Learning new skills means you become more confident and shows that you are a hard worker which interests employers. By learning new skills, you can also add them to your CV .This means you have a better chance of getting the job you have applied for.

Getting a good reference

If you make a good impression during your work experience, you will get a good reference which you can use to help you get jobs at other companies. Getting a good reference is key because the person who kindly chose to give you a reference will say things like “this person always has 100% attendance, was never late and always worked hard” etc. References are usually people from your old or other work, but it can also be the person who let you do work experience.

Summary

To conclude, doing work experience has many benefits for your CV, helps you learn new skills and get a good reference. These are the most important things and I believe work experience will help me and many others gain the skills we all need to be more employable in future.
