Level 2 Playwork Diploma

Build the foundations for best practice

Is this course for me?

If you’re currently working in an after school, holiday club or playscheme with children and young people between 4-16 years of age and you want to learn how to promote children’s learning through play, this course would be ideal for you!

How do I achieve the qualification?

The course is made up of a number of units, each with a credit score. To gain the Level 2 Diploma you will need to achieve a minimum of 61 credits.
There are 12 mandatory units to complete with a total credit score of 45 and then you will chose 2 or 3 optional units which add up to 16 credits to bring the total credits achieved to a minimum of 61 credits. The optional units give you the flexibility to choose subject areas which really interest you and will be beneficial for the job role you’re currently in.

Will I need to attend classes?

No, this is a work-based qualification. There are no classes to attend and you don’t have to take time out to go to college either! When you start your training, you’ll be assigned a Parenta assessor with many years experience of working in childcare. Their role is to guide you through the course, support you when you need it and make sure you finish with the qualification you deserve! Your assessor will visit you at work on a regular basis and will support you in-between visits via the telephone and online.

How will I be assessed?

At the start of your course, your assessor will talk to you about how you like to learn and can then tailor your course assessments. You’ll be assessed through a mixture of ‘at home’ and ‘at work’ tasks which will include:

At home:

  • Writing from personal experience
  • Case studies
  • Assignments asking you to describe/explain something
  • Reflections on how you dealt with past events

At work:

  • Observations of your work practice
  • Guided discussions with your assessor
  • Answering questions from your assessor

How long will the course take me to complete?

As with anything worthwhile, this course requires you to dedicate some of your time to it. The expected course completion time is 12 months, but afterwards you’ll have the fantastic feeling of having a professionally recognised playwork qualification which will help you in your career.

Will it take up much of my time?

You’ll need to set aside between 3 to 5 hours of your own time each week to work towards your qualification online. You will be set regular work by your assessor to help keep you on track with your course and you can split your home study time up in whichever way suits you best each week. This might be spending an hour or so online every day after work or setting aside blocks of time to work on your course on the days that you’re not working, it’s up to you.

How do I achieve the qualification?

Upon completion of the course, you’ll receive a Level 2 NVQ Playwork Diploma plus Maths & English Functional Skills Certificates. You’ll also receive an Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities and Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning.

Once I have achieved the Level 2 Playwork Diploma, what would be the next steps in my career?

Qualified playworkers can work in a wide range of environments including after school clubs, adventure playgrounds, soft play areas, family centres and holiday clubs. On completion of the Level 2 Diploma you can progress to the Level 3 Playwork Diploma which would then enable you to access higher level jobs in playwork.
