Beeches Montessori Nursery School in Osier Way, Banstead has failed an Ofsted inspection because they failed to do the required checks on new staff members.
Rated as “inadequate” by the governing body, it was discovered that the setting had failed to carry out Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks as well as Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) checks.
The Ofsted report states:
“The provider does not have a secure knowledge and understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements.”
“Vetting procedures are not robust to determine the suitability of all staff. Consequently, children are not safeguarded.”
It identified that some members of staff had not had the necessary checks, ultimately putting children at risk.
The report did go on to say that all staff members were aware of child protection and welfare procedures.
The nursery accommodates 50 children aged 2 to 5 and hit back at the report which fails to highlight that the 2 members of staff in question were in fact teachers previously.
“The report gives the impression that the nursery employed two new members of staff with no knowledge of their background, when in fact both are teachers with many years of teaching experience being vetted many times one of whom undertook their teacher training with us.
“Both teachers had a disclosure in place but they were outdated. It was an unfortunate administrative oversight which was corrected immediately.”
“We have the full support of our parents and will continue to provide an excellent education, guidance, care and quality experiences for the children in our care.”
Other elements within the report highlighted that the children were happily engaged in activities, but there was some oversight with those who were less willing. It also stated that not all staff had access to supervision and professional development.
Overall the report stated that “Children are happy and settled. They generally develop sound relationships with staff who are nurturing and sensitive to their care needs.”
How important is it to complete your own checks even if your staff members have previous disclosures?
