Sunflowers Nursery School at The Old Schoolhouse in Sheffield has been given a one out of five food hygiene rating. The nursery was visited by environmental health officers on the 5th December; it has now been told it needs to make major improvements to the way it manages food safety.
The recommendations given include ensuring that staff know about food safety and that the standards they need to meet are maintained in the future. However, the nursery was still rated ‘very good’ on the way the business cooks, handles and stores the food, and its general cleanliness was also rated as ‘good’.
The manager, Emma Curry, explained that the rating was purely down to an administration error. She said, “Following our recent Food Safety and Hygiene inspection we were extremely disappointed to be awarded one star.
“We take great pride in offering locally-sourced, well balanced, high quality meals for the children in our care.
“The high standard in which our food is handled, prepared, cooked and stored in our clean kitchen has no impact of the rating we received. We have held a four plus star rating since the scheme was introduced.
“However, we acknowledge that following an administration error a section within the ‘Better Food Safer Business’ pack was incomplete from our handbook, the section within ‘Safe Method’ was incomplete, the consequence of this was to be awarded a food hygiene rating of one.
“Since our inspection last month this has been rectified and the handbook is fully completed, therefore we are now fully compliant. The Environmental Health Practitioner returned last week and is satisfied with the outcome. As a setting we will be welcoming them back in March and look forward to having our stars re-evaluated.”
The reviews of the nursery on daynurseries.co.uk score an average of 8.7 out of 10, with two excellent reviews and two good.
One reviewer said: “Both of my children have attended Sunflowers Nursery from being babies and I am extremely happy with the care they have received. The nursery is clean and well equipped. Staff are friendly and attentive towards the children, providing appropriate care and attention for each child.
“Both of my children are bright and eager to learn and are adequately challenged through the activities that they do. The standard of food is good, with well-balanced meals and healthy snacks and they have catered extremely well for my dairy intolerant child. My eldest child loves the outdoor play areas and caring for the rabbit. Overall a lovely nursery that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.”
While another wrote: “My daughter has been at Sunflowers since she was 13 months and she’s now 4 1/2 and she loves going. By going to Sunflowers I feel it has brought her on so much from her learning to talk to writing her name and eating a different variety of meals. All the staff have been excellent right from the start. They accommodate us with extra days if we need them or on the odd occasion changing days. Nothing is ever a problem.
“My daughter really enjoys and I’ll be very sad when she leaves in July to go to school. Really can’t recommend Sunflowers enough.”
