Bluebell Pre-school has been awarded Essex County Council’s Good Beginnings silver award for their skill in providing support to children with autism.
The pre-school, first registered in 1969, operates from a village hall in West Bergholt.
In order to gain the award, staff and pupils at the setting had to take part in observations in front of experts from the Good Beginnings team in order to demonstrate their training.
Manager of Bluebell Pre-school Jackie Leach said that receiving the award was a joint achievement and she hopes that the pre-school would soon be able to achieve the gold standard.
She said: “It’s brilliant news for us and it has been a real team effort from everyone here.
“I think the main message we have taken is how unique every child is.”
She added: “We are all really proud and there will not be many pre-schools around who have this award.”
Many early years providers are working with young children who have been diagnosed with autism or children who have similar needs but have not been diagnosed.
Staff are required to have a basic knowledge and understanding about autism and how to meet the needs of children with the diagnosis, even if they do not have any in their setting.
