The Nursery, based in Portishead, has been teaching children about giving back and motivated them to create ‘reverse’ advent calendars. Children are asked to put something inside the reverse calendar instead of taking things out. Both parents and children were encouraged to bring food and toys for the calendars throughout the advent period.
The Nursery’s children then talked about the items received and debated who might get the donated items. Once the advent calendars are finished, they will be given to the baby bank or foodbank.
Jackie Hardie, nursery owner and childcare expert said to North Somerset Times: “The festive season presents a great opportunity to discuss the real meaning of Christmas and help children to think of others. “Empathy is really hard for young children to grasp, but there are things we can do to encourage children to give something back.”
