Course length - up to 15 months

The Level 2 Early Years Practitioner apprenticeship runs in two parts. The main teaching phase typically takes around 12 months for full-time learners, longer if you're studying part-time. After that comes a three-month Gateway and End-Point Assessment period, bringing the total to roughly 15 months for most full-time apprentices. Everything is delivered remotely, with regular contact from a dedicated tutor who visits your setting every eight to ten weeks.

Modules and KSBs breakdown

Like every childcare apprenticeship standard, this course is built around Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours, or KSBs, which map out exactly what a competent Early Years Practitioner needs to know, do and demonstrate.

Knowledge - child development, the EYFS statutory framework, safeguarding and child protection, health and safety, and equality and inclusion.
Skills - observing and assessing children's progress, planning age-appropriate activities, supporting physical, emotional and social development, and building relationships with parents and carers.

The 2025 refresh to the standard dropped the requirement for a specific qualification title, which gives training providers more flexibility to tailor delivery around your setting and your pace of learning, while still meeting the Department for Education's criteria for practising at Level 2 in ratio.

Entry requirements

As with most early years qualifications, including the Level 2 Early Years Practitioner apprenticeship, you don't need a long list of prior certificates to start, but there are a few practical requirements.

You must currently be employed in a paid role within an early years childcare setting.
You'll need to be working under the supervision of a more senior practitioner.
If you haven't already achieved GCSEs in English and maths, Functional Skills support is built into the course and fully funded.
