Opening a nursery. Would you do it again?

Opening a nursery. Would you do it again?

Opening a nurseryCompetition for places, condemnation of the Government’s Code of Practice and restricted cash flows. Can the love of providing quality childcare really be enough for someone to start-up their own nursery today?

We are often asked for advice by those considering starting a nursery, on where to start, best practice or simply if the idea is right for them.

The shape of the industry today, suggests that nursery owners have never had it so tough, so  would new, and inexperienced owners be able to cope?

We thought who better to ask than our readers, experienced and professional childcare providers? We want to hear about your experiences and advice on running a nursery, so that we can provide the next generation of providers with a future reference point to help them make their  decision.

Are there any common mistakes that you’ve learnt from over the years, or is there a secret to maintaining a healthy relationship with parents?

Receive £1,500 – £3,000 for employing a young apprentice

The AGE 16 to 24 Grant for Employers aims to support nurseries, who would not otherwise be in a position to do so, to recruit individuals aged 16 to 24 into employment though the Apprenticeship programme.

The National Apprenticeship Service will provide AGE 16 to 24 year olds to eligible employers, in respect of qualifying apprentices, with an individual value of £1,500. Employers can be paid ten grants in total during the lifetime of the initiative.

AGE 16 to 24 is available to any nursery (with less than 1000 employees), who are new to Apprenticeships or haven’t enrolled a new recruit or existing employee onto an Apprenticeship programme in the previous 12 months.

An enhanced London AGE 16 to 24 Grant of £3000 is available to employers with London postcodes from 10 June – 31 December 2013. The enhanced London grant comprises of the £1500 available as part of the existing NAS AGE 16 to 24 Grant, which has been matched by another £1500 from the London Enterprise Panel (LEP) to make a total enhanced grant to eligible employers of £3000.

Looking for an Apprentice? Parenta can help.

If you are considering hiring an apprentice, speak to Parenta as we receive CV’s every day from young people looking for an opportunity to work in childcare.  We will spend the time to understand exactly who you are looking for, and will match any suitable applicants for you.

We will then arrange an interview at a mutually convenient time, and prepare the applicant in advance.  If you decide to recruit an apprentice, we will enroll them onto a level 2 or 3 apprenticeship (according to previous experience) and carry out observations within the workplace.

EDI visit reveals excellence in delivery of qualifications and quality assurance

EDI visit reveals excellence in delivery of qualifications and quality assurance

Childcare training providersParenta Training, were described as ”excellent” in delivery of qualifications and quality assurance in an EV (External Verification) visit from EDI this week.

As a leading childcare training provider, we have made admirable strides in the past year in successfully helping child care professionals efficiently gain childcare qualifications.

Barbara, the EDI verifier, commented that immense progression had been achieved within our procedures and practice and that Parenta Training continues to demonstrate excellent skills, currently being ahead of the programme within the QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework).

She left Parenta Training’s centre without giving any actions, and we’re now authorised to make direct claims for CCLD’s meaning our learners receive their completion certificates much quicker.

Debbie Sinclair, a Regional Training Manager at Parenta Training said of the achievement, “I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the whole team for their continued support. The outcome today is a huge testament to our hard work.”

Concern over private nursery cash

Concern over private nursery cash

Free childcare is a financial constraint for many nurseriesMinisters have been asked to clarify government policy on part-time funded nursery places after claims councils may be “ignoring” official guidelines.

Scottish Conservative education spokeswoman Liz Smith is seeking assurances that funded places have not been withdrawn from private nurseries.

If this happens, parents need to find another partner nursery or risk losing a part-time funded place.

In some cases this can be worth up to £1,550 per year for each child.
