The importance of child-led learning

About The Guide

As we progress through our childcare training and become qualified and experienced professionals, we naturally guide the children in our care to certain predetermined activities: storytime, circle time, garden fun, snack time, mark-making etc. These activities are generally loved by children, and they look to us to lead them to the next play session - or meal!

However, it’s important that we also offer children opportunities to choose their learning activity - whether that's building with blocks, playing in the sandpit, or painting, for example. This ‘child-led play’ gives us a great opportunity to observe how that child approaches the activity and how they adapt the task to their own direction.
